چکیده

Wireless networks have become increasingly popular for the past few years, especially IEEE 802.11 as the most widespread wireless technology. This article proposes a new architecture for broadband 802.11 networks to support distributed multimedia applications. After discussing the differences between multimedia and traditional applications, we show how the 802.11b mechanism ensuring enhanced robustness connectivity for low signal to noise ratio (SNR) areas, penalizes multimedia stream transmissions. A new multimedia architecture disabling Dynamic Rate Shifting mechanism and using a performance enhancing proxy is then proposed.

Hierarchical analysis of RealMedia streaming traffic on an IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN

The popularity of multimedia streaming on the Internet, combined with the growing deployment of wireless access networks, augurs the converging usage of these two technologies in the not-too-distant future. Experience with wireless multimedia streaming on today’s networks can provide valuable insights into the design of future wireless multimedia networks and applications. In this paper, we pre...

VoIP over WLAN 802.11b simulations for infrastructure and ad-hoc networks

Voice IP (VoIP) over wireless local area network (WLAN) is a topic of great interest in the research arena. To investigate what are the performance limitations in establishing VoIP calls over WLAN networks we performed some simulations. We show in this paper these simulation results in ad-hoc and infrastructure WLAN networks, working under ideal and real conditions. Measures and graphs of packe...

A Fuzzy Based Approach for Rate Control in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) undergo congestion when a link (or a node) becomes overpopulated in terms of incoming packets. In WMSNs this happens especially in upstream nodes where all incoming packets meet and directed to the sink node. Congestion in networks, if not handled properly, might lead to congestion collapse which deteriorates the quality of service (QoS). Therefore, i...

Multimedia SIP sessions in a Mobile Heterogeneous Access Environment

Maintaining multimedia sessions by means of SIP [3] signaling has often been termed as application layer mobility management scheme [5]. There have been numerous proposals [1], [4], [2] to support different types of mobility using SIP signaling which is generally used to set up and tear down the multimedia stream. Mobility management in heterogeneous networks plays a very important role since t...

Performance Comparison of IEEE 802.11e EDCA and 802.11b DCF Under Non- Saturation Condition using Network Simulator

In this study, throughput and delay performance of IEEE 802.11b and 802.11e is presented under non-saturation conditions. In order to improve the performance of IEEE 802.11b, the IEEE 802.11e has been proposed to improve the Quality of Services (QoS) for multimedia application. The standard 802.11b CSMA/CA contention mechanism does not support QoS but the standard 802.11e provides QoS by adjust...
